Hedgehog rescued

This hedgehog was found yesterday in the university of York grounds.

As luck would have it a member of staff was going to topup one of our hedgehog feeding stations. The hedgehog popped in for a bite to eat then proceeded to walk around

This was around 1pm so clearly something was wrong

This hedgehog who has been called Kim was taken to Urchins hedgehog rescue for a check over. Turns out internal parasites and loosing weight quickly

Moral of the story, a hedgehog out during the daytime may look healthy as shown in this video. However can also have unseen health problems

Hopefully this hog will make a full recovery and back on campus grounds in the near future.

First wildlife water station installed.

Today Wednesday 24th August 2022 we fitted our first wildlife water station. Just nineteen more to go.

These water stations will provide water for many small animals during our warmer seasons.

Wildlife water stations

This week we have been working on wildlife water stations.

We have had a hot summer and a very long period of drought.

Throughout this arrid time we have been topping up water containers for local wildlife around the University of York grounds.

This helped a little but was time consuming and the water soon evaporated in the heat of the sun.

So I went away looking for an answer to resolve this problem. Through a pretty extensive search on google I came across Bushfire wildlife water stations from Australia.

Now the purpose of this water station was to make sure surviving wildlife after a bushfire had the potential to find clean drinking water.

So we purchased the required components and built our own water stations.

We made one small change, which was to add a screen so as we can introduce small stones. These help insects to get to the water and also a means of escape if they fall in.

Hopefully this week we will get all our water stations set up around the University campus.

We are hoping to have 20 set up in total, which will help a lot of wildlife.

They are big they are ugly, but they do provide much needed water.

Hedgehog found dehydrated on Campus.

Today Thursday 21st of July following the record breaking heatwave. This hedgehog was discovered during the day in obvious distress.

Luckily one of our hedgehog champions was in the area, so was able to quickly respond.

This hedgehog who was named Olivia, was taken to Urchins hedgehog rescue.

It was soon determined that this hedgehog was dehydrated but also lactating. This was a clear indication pregnant or already had hoglets waiting in the nest. It was decided the best action was to return Olivia back to where she was found.

All this took place very quickly as other lives was now at risk.

Olivia was returned with food in her belly, along with plenty of fluids.

A container for fresh water is getting put in place this same day.

Visit to Woodthorpe Primary School

Another school visit, this time Woodthorpe primary.

We received a very warm welcome from the children and their teachers.

The children enjoyed building log piles, whilst receiving education upon the importance of them.

Surveillance tunnels where used around the school sports fields. We discovered the following day that hedgehog prints were found, which supports evidence  of hedgehogs in the locality.

The children received a talk about feeding hedgehogs and the importance of water. Where hedgehogs sleep and how they could help. Also discussed was hedgehog highways.

It was a fun day throughout.
